Who is Dalton’s Flowers
On November 5, 1941, William (Dee) and Anne Dalton purchased a two acre tract of land in Overland Park, Ks. Besides the family home, the land included three 150 foot greenhouses, a countrified car garage, acreage enough to grow blooming plants and cut flowers, and a chicken coop.
The family struggled that first year with leaky greenhouses, a poinsettia crop that was late and WWII rationing stamps that made floral  supplies, seeds and cuttings scarce as well as food. Throughout the 1940s the business grew as did the Dalton Family and the shear  fortitude to battle and conquer challenges like the smoke stack collapsing. By 1948, there were eight children.
The 50s brought three more greenhouses and production of hydrangeas, poinsettias, Easter lilies and geraniums. Fighting heat during 1958  brought bumble bees into the greenhouse and they pollinated ten thousand snapdragons, so that crop was lost. But the challenges again  were overcome.
The 1960s introduced a rapid growth to Overland Park and a demand for retail businesses. By the end of the 60s, the wholesale business  had been phased out and the retail business opened in a newly remodeled rustic space with another converted old building into an antique  and gift shop.
In the 1970s, the two buildings were joined, the greenhouses sold, except one that was made into a solarium. The work on Weddings, Holidays, any and All Occasions, Funerals all continued as the staff at the Flower Shop continued to grow.
By 1984, both Anne and Dee Dalton had passed away. Their deaths were a tremendous loss. They were trailblazers and took great pride in that all of the eight children had labored in the fields and learned the trade, several went on to become outstanding floral designers. Most of the 37 grandchildren have also participated in the business. In June of 1987, the flower shop was destroyed in a fire. There were weddings that week, one building on the property remained unscathed, business went on, a refrigerator truck was brought in for flowers and business was open, the weddings were completed. The new building was ready in March of 1988. So, the story continues.
Dalton’s Flowers is owned by Anne and Dee’s son Bill, and with several of the Dalton Children and Grandchildren involved in the day to day as Designers, Consultants, and even cleanup and maintenance (from Janitor to Artist), none of the values set by Anne and Dee have been lost. The business mantra that was instilled in the Dalton Family was to treat customers like they were part of the family and make sure their experience in purchasing flowers from Dalton’s was always a delight. Dalton’s invites you to become a part of the family.
